Aari & Kantha Collection
Twisted Guru beach yoga mats are available in two-(2) different collections, Aari embroidered fabric and Kantha quilted material. Both options were chosen for their ancient beauty, texture and comfort.
Aari Embroidery
Aari fabric has been in existence since the 12th century in India. “Aari” designs are of Mughal origin and crafted only by men. The creation of Aari embroidery on fabric demands a great amount of precision and patience. At first the selected fabric is fixed on an wooden frame, usually made of bamboos. Craftsmen then trace the pattern on the fabric and then the embroidery work begins. An Aari needle is used to weave the motifs on the fabric. The pattern is organized in a specific way to form symbols and create a message to honor the deities. The mats have been embroidered with vegetable dyed threads, in magnificent detail, creating a natural non-slip texture. Each mat is an unique work of art, embodying a mystical piece of history.
Kantha Quilting
mat features
Kantha quilting is practiced by the rural women of Bengal. It is believed the artisan sews wishes and blessings into the fabric with each stitch. The mats are assembled from vintage saris and are equally beautiful on both sides. Their spontaneous color and pattern dazzle in one-of-a-kind masterpieces. The mats are an up-cycled work of art and may possess worn components, patches or perfectly aged inconsistencies, all of which add to the unique charm.
